What is Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)? |
The Secure Sockets Layer protects data transferred over http using encryption enabled by a server's SSL Certificate. An SSL Certificate contains a public key and a private key. A public key is used to encrypt information and a private key is used to decipher it. When a browser points to a secured domain, an SSL handshake authenticates the server and the client and establishes an encryption method and a unique session key. They can begin a secure session that protects message privacy and message integrity.
|
How will people know my website is safe? |
When a visitor enters an SSL-protected page on your website, their browser bar displays a padlock and the https:// prefix in the URL address. While most Internet users know to look for those SSL indicators, you can also add a site seal to your website to show visitors your site is verified and secured. Visitors can click the SSL site seal to view your certificate's status and details, seeing for themselves that it's safe to send sensitive information to your website.
|
What is a Certificate Signing Request (CSR)? |
The CSR is a string of text generated by your server software. You provide this string of text to VeriSign during the enrollment process.
|
What encryption strength do I need for my Web site? |
Best security practices are to install a unique certificate on each server and choose a True 128-bit Certificate by purchasing a Server Gated Cryptography (SGC)-enabled SSL Certificate. A unique certificate keeps your private keys protected, and an SGC-enabled certificate ensures that every site visitor, no matter what browser or operating system they use, connects at the highest level of encryption their system is capable of. You need 128-bit or better encryption if you process payments, share confidential data, or collect personally identifiable information such as social security or tax ID number, mailing address, or date of birth. You need 128-bit or better encryption if your customers are concerned about the privacy of the data they send to you.
|
What web browsers are supported? |
Our SSL certificates enjoy 99% browser support, also know as ubiquity, but that is only part of the story. GeoTrust SSL certificates are also supported in many micro browsers, such as mobile phones and PDAs.
|
How do web site visitors know if a web site is using SSL? |
When a browser connects to a secure site it retrieves the site's SSL certificate and checks that it has not expired, that it has been issued by a Certificate Authority the browser trusts and that it is being used by the web site for which it has been issued. If it fails on any one of these checks the browser will display a warning to the end user. If it succeeds, several security indicators are built into modern browsers to indicate that SSL is enabled. 钬?The beginning of the URL or web address changes from http:// to https:// • A padlock on the browser window changes from open to closed 钬?The address bar will turn green and display the name of the web site owner when connecting to a web site protected by an Extended Validation SSL certificate such as True BusinessID with EV. In addition, a trust mark such as a site seal may be added to web pages on a secure site.

How do I reissue my GeoTrust SSL certificate? |
